Small jobs
My name is Andrew. I live in the United States. I am fourteen and I am a
newspaper boy. Every morning before school I deliver newspapers, so I have to
get up early. I go to the newspaper stand which is near my home. I must be
there by 7 o’clock. The shopkeeper gives me the newspapers for about twenty
customers at a time. I put the papers into a bag, and I go as fast as I can on
my bicycle. There are different newspapers and the right one has to go to the
right customer.
Then I go back for another 20 newspapers. I deliver about 100 newspapers
a day. I must go fast, because school starts at 9 o’clock.
I get 2 cents for every newspaper that I deliver. So I get about $ 12.00
a week. At Christmas, customers give me a present of money. So it is not a bad
job. There is a prize each year for the best newspaper boy. I hope to win this
year.

The Examination
I was waiting for
the doctor to finish is examination. I was worried and nervous. Would he have
to be operated? Would a blood transfusion be necessary? What would he have to
say?
Dr. Johnson was a
heart specialist. He was an excellent doctor and his examinations were always
complete. He listens to the patient’s heart, took his blood pressure and
temperature, gave him an X – ray and examined his eyes and ears.
The doctor family
completed this examination and talked to me. He told me that heart trouble is
never a minor illness, but this wasn’t a serious heart attack. He advised
losing some weight, getting plenty of sleep and eating good meals. Smoking and
drinking would be careful of course. Dr. Johnson said it would be necessary to
be careful for a while, but he was confident that there was nothing to worry
about.

The marriage of Alice
Alice and Simon got married at Saint-Martin last
month. Simon, the groom, wore a dark costume. Alice, the bride, wore a long
white wedding dress. Ulrick was Simon’s best man. He helped Simon to dress.
Paulette was the bridesmaid. She wore a pretty dress, and had flowers in her
hair.
Alice’s friend, Joseph, drove them to the church.
Alice looked beautiful with white flowers in her hands. The parish priest
welcomed them and blessed their wedding. Simon put the wedding ring on Alice’s
finger and Alice put the wedding ring on Simon’s finger, and they became
husband and wife.
Then the photographers took many photographs,
especially of the newlyweds and their parents. Alice’s parents, Marc and
Nicole, stood next to her. Nicole wore a short white dress. Simon’s parents
stood next to him. Anna, Simon’s mother, wore a blue dress and a hat.
Later, at the reception, Alice and Simon cut their
wedding cake. Everybody was smiling and looked happy. It was a wonderful
wedding.
